Building Paradise Responsibly: How Vesta Wellness Resorts Brought a Hawaiian Sanctuary to Life

Vesta Wellness Resorts, Inc. has spent a decade earning a reputation for eco-tourism that refuses to compromise — properties where the luxury is inseparable from the landscape, and where sustainability is a felt experience rather than a line in a brochure. So when Vesta acquired eight acres on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii for a new flagship, Hale Kai, the brief to Makes Belief was demanding by design: create an arrival and grounds experience that feels ancient and effortless, performs against real sustainability targets, and can be maintained beautifully for decades.

What followed was a multi-service engagement that touched nearly every part of our business — from consulting through design-build and into ongoing managed care.

Before a single stone was placed, our hospitality consultants spent six weeks mapping the guest journey. The Guest Experience Blueprint defined the rituals a Hale Kai stay would be built around: a lei-and-water welcome drawn from local tradition, a wellness garden for morning practice, and quiet coastal thresholds that slow guests down as they move toward the sea.

That blueprint became the brief for everything physical that followed. It is the difference between a resort that has nice landscaping and a resort where the landscape is the reason people remember their stay.

The centerpiece was our Outdoor Space Design & Build engagement — an $85,000 flagship project transforming the coastal grounds. Native and climate-appropriate planting anchors the site, chosen with local horticulturists to thrive without heavy irrigation. A lava-rock water feature marks the arrival court. Low-voltage landscape lighting extends the grounds into the evening without drowning out the stars, which on the Kohala Coast are very much part of the amenity.

The work is currently mid-installation, following approved landscape architecture, with a hardscape and water-feature review scheduled for late August. Vesta's team tracks progress in real time through their Makes Belief business account.

A landscape this considered is only as good as its second year. That is why the engagement rolls into a managed Landscape & Grounds Maintenance program at Vesta's other properties, and why the planting palette was chosen for resilience as much as beauty.

It is also why Vesta furnished the wellness spaces with the same catalog they trust across their portfolio — eco-friendly yoga mats, cork blocks, and meditation cushions ordered by the dozen for the resort's daily programming.
